I finished Ghettoside about a month ago. It is a must-read for Americans who are voting in this year's Presidential election, especially in light of last night's debate topics and regardless of your political lean.
Jill Leovy’s journalistic account of the culture in South Central L.A. in the early 2000s is brilliant. She seamlessly and eloquently weaves together polarizing issues like illegal firearms, race, the state of our judicial system including that of modern policing, and the many different realities and experiences of today's Americans. From the economic barriers existing in poor, urban communities to the distinct form of grief suffered in the wake of homocide, Leovy exposes seemingly foreign truths about America and about humanity with tremendous grace and refined skill.
Highly, highly recommend.
